Smack Talk Best Beginner Fighters
Pick a kit you can shout while jumping — then ignore the meme roster for a week.
Beginner picks in Smack Talk are not “who looks friendly.” Gorilla looks friendly and will get you blasted. The filter is: short phrases, a recovery you will actually say, and at least one tool that works if you are too scared to stand next to people. That is why this list disagrees with the top of the character tier list in places.
Take these first
Cowboy — Guns mean you can play the game without a perfect chop confirm. The recovery is a line people enjoy saying, which is an underrated beginner stat. Read the Cowboy page, then lab one ledge shot.
Chef — More homework, still correct. Chops teach confirms. Sushi Train teaches patience. You will use both skills on every other fighter. Chef is the tutorial wearing a hat.
Magical Girl — Blasts are readable. Service is a sentence you will remember from the trailer. If you can aim a column, you can take a stock at eight players without a grab timing.
Fighter — If you want zero gimmicks. Palms, fists, short words. You will lose to guns and still learn movement from controls without a prop in the way.
Frog Wizard — If you already like shout-casters. Fireball is the fantasy. Do not live in levitation; the up-attack cap exists to humble you.
Take these in week two
Pigeon if you can handle a collab kit with several bird noises. Doctor if you like awkward timing. Samurai if koi lanes make sense. Diver only after platforms feel obvious — the Diver page is honest about that.
Do not take these on night one
Duck — Cadence combos punish hesitation, which is the entire beginner experience. Barn — Animal sounds in a voice fighter is how you grief your own recognizer. Santa — Long holiday lines. Fast Food — Nerfed damage, still a joke. Wolf — You will dash offstage. Power Ranger / Kaiju — New, cool, undocumented; beat the tutorial stage first.
Random select is a dare, not a teacher. Play the how to play loop on a locked fighter until recoveries are automatic.
A one-week syllabus
Day 1: mic permissions, getting started, Cowboy or Chef only. Day 2: voice commands and ten recoveries off a platform. Day 3: one edge-guard from combos. Day 4: a four-player lobby, not eight. Day 5: read your fighter’s overlay after any patch on patch notes. Day 6: try Magical Girl or Fighter as a secondary. Day 7: glance at the main tier list and ignore anything that needs a thesis.
If a recommended beginner “does not work,” it is usually the device. Run mic setup before you promote Duck. If the device works and you still cannot take a stock, you are shouting ultimates at 0%. Stop. Walk. Fast-fall. Say the small line.
Beginner lists exist so you do not bounce off a 27-fighter cartoon. Two kits, one week, then the rest of the roster is dessert.
What “easy” does not mean
Easy does not mean low damage. Cowboy still kills. Easy does not mean no lab. Chef still needs a confirm. Easy means the first syllable of the recovery will leave your mouth when you are scared. That is the whole skill floor of a voice fighter, and it is why this page exists beside the character tier list instead of as a footnote.
If your group speaks another overlay language, rerun the filter. A short English line can become a clause in German. Rank the overlay you actually see, then keep this English page as a kit-role guide: gun, dish, blast, fist, fireball. Roles travel. Sentences do not.
Parents in the same lobby as kids should still pick Chef or Magical Girl over Cop and Pirate punchlines. The game is rated for cartoon violence; the microphone is not rated for your living room. That is not a tier concern, but it is a first-night concern, and this is the first-night list.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Smack Talk questions.
Is Cowboy really easier than Fighter?
For most people, yes, because missed shots still apply pressure. Fighter requires you to stand in the blender.
Why is Duck not a beginner character?
The three-piece needs cadence. Beginners hesitate. Hesitation resets the string.
Can I main Teacher first?
You can. Detention is a strong gimmick. It is not on this list because the rest of the kit still wants overlay homework.
What if my friends only play eight-player FFA?
Even more reason to start Cowboy or Magical Girl. Read how to win before you bring Wolf.
