Combos and Edge Guarding

Combos in Smack Talk are not Tekken files. They are a hit, a recognizer window, and a second phrase that still connects when the opponent is stunned. Miss the window and you get a trade in an eight-player pileup. This page is the mechanical half of offense. Pair it with voice commands and the controls jump timing.

The official Duck video is the cleanest public lesson. The studio bound three tags to one phrase. Repeat the line quickly and you get a three-piece. Hesitate and it resets to the first hit. That is the whole skill ceiling in miniature: cadence is a combo tool. If your friends laugh too long between words, they drop the string. If you whisper, the string never starts.

Spoken confirms, not command lists

A practical combo is:

  1. Fast basic that stuns (Chop Chop, Quack, a jab-like palm).
  2. Walk or hop during the stun — many moves now allow movement on windup because standing still was hopeless.
  3. A second line with more knockback (You’re Cooked, a shotgun, a service line).
  4. If they are at the ledge, skip the stylish third hit and go straight to an edge-guard projectile.

Stun times are patch food. Chef Chop Chop went from 0.35s to 0.2s per hit. Magical Girl service stun was cut. Wolf claw stun dropped from a full second toward 0.6. When a confirm you loved dies, it is usually stun, not a deleted move. Check patch notes before you retire the fighter.

Percent still scales knockback. A spaghetti confirm that barely pops at 20% will send at 80%. Do not spend ultimates at 10% unless you are farming a clown in FFA. Save the long one-liner for the clip.

Tech the patch notes accidentally documented

Chef’s ultimate projectiles were not supposed to bounce off Chef. A player hit the lid, the lid hit the projectile, and the dish became a redirect. That is now tribal knowledge: interactable props inside supers are combo glue. Eat Up was later patched so more dishes collide with characters. If you main Chef, practice hitting your own lids on purpose.

Diver creates manta-ray platforms. That is a combo route and an edge-guard at once: place a platform where a recovering player wants to be, then fish-slap or anchor. Diver is the character you pick when you like stage control more than raw damage.

Cowboy’s ranged kit exists to steal stocks at the ledge. Catch-this style shots and Buck Shot (piercing later removed) are edge-guard tools. Do not chase offstage with Cowboy unless the recovery line is already in your mouth. Let the bullet travel. The Cowboy page has the draw and shotgun context.

Pigeon gobble with movement enabled was called out as possibly busted. Bird kits that move during a chomp become chase tools. Treat any “enabled movement on this move” note as a combo buff even when the damage number did not change.

Edge guarding is the real super

Community how-to videos spend real time on this because it transfers from Smash. When someone is offstage:

  • Do not immediately shout your recovery. You are not the one dying.
  • Walk to the ledge, drop, fast-fall if needed, and throw the smallest projectile you have.
  • Cover jump and cover the up-special. Three up-attacks is their budget; make them spend it far from the wall.
  • If you miss, get back. An even trade at the ledge in FFA just feeds a third player.

Stages change the diagram. Lava eats the center. Jail is a box with vertical bars and cop toys. Pirate ship has more horizontal run-off. Chalkboard is wide. City 1.0 is a new sightline for Ranger and Kaiju. Walk each layout in the stages tool before you lab a ledge.

Team mode changes edge-guard ethics. Friendly fire off means you can fill the blast zone with overlapping projectiles. Friendly fire on means your partner’s Duck string will clip you. Call it in chat.

What not to combo

Do not combo emotes. Do not combo a full ultimate into a second ultimate. Do not start a string if three other people are already in the hurtbox — you will eat a random Wolf dash. In eight-player FFA, the winning “combo” is often one hit plus a shove toward someone else’s projectile. Play the room, not the lab.

Lab anyway. Empty lobby, one fighter, ten stocks, no ego. When the string works at 50% and 90%, take it into how to win party rules. That is the whole offensive curriculum.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Smack Talk questions.

Does Smack Talk have true combos?

Yes at the level of stun plus a second phrase. They are timing-and-speech confirms, not 20-hit files. Duck's repeated phrase is the clearest example.

What is Chef lid tech?

The lid in Chef's super can hit other projectiles. Players use that interaction to redirect dishes. See the Chef page.

When should I edge-guard instead of ulting?

Whenever they are already offstage with spent up-attacks. A small projectile is cheaper than a whiffed one-liner.

Why did my old confirm stop working?

Stun and end-lag are patched constantly. Compare your string to the latest patch history.
