Smack Talk Cowboy Guide
Range, a shoutable recovery, and ledge shots — the lobby-browser fighter.
Cowboy is the fighter you pick when you want Smack Talk to feel like a platform fighter instead of a karaoke night. The kit arrived with the lobby browser in January 2026, after players asked for a gunslinger and for a way to join strangers. Both requests still define him: you spend most of the stock at mid range, you speak short Western lines, and you steal stocks at the ledge instead of diving after people.
Official clips describe an up-attack draw, a down shot, a yeehaw-style recovery, and a ranged special used to edge-guard. Steam patch notes later name Quick Draw, Buck Shot, and Your Time Is Up, plus a damage trim on Quick Draw (9 to 8), extra end-lag, and the removal of Buck Shot piercing. If your overlay wording differs, trust Shift. This page teaches the job, not a frame bible.
Why Cowboy is a beginner that still kills
Compared with Chef, Cowboy asks you to talk less often and to aim more. That is a gift on night one. You can walk, jump, and fire. You are not obligated to cadence a three-piece like Duck. You are not obligated to land next to someone to Chop Chop. The beginner picks list him for that reason.
The recovery is also sayable. Plenty of kits die because the player refuses to shout the up-special in voice chat. Cowboy’s line is theatrical on purpose. Practice it while jumping backward on the tutorial stage as described in controls. If you cannot say it offstage, you do not have a Cowboy yet.
Neutral: walk, draw, do not panic-ult
Open with the fastest shot that still lets you move. Quick Draw’s later nerf disabled movement while hitboxes are active — that is your warning not to fire it point-blank against Wolf. Space it. If they run at you, down shot or a hop-back line. If they stay away, you already won the matchup against grab characters.
Buck Shot is the stock-taker at the ledge, not a neutral poke you spam at 0%. Piercing was removed, so lined-up FFA kills are rarer. Aim the wounded player. In eight-player chaos, one bullet into someone else’s knockback is a win; see how to win.
Your Time Is Up is a knockback tool (6x3 to 7x3 in one patch). Use it as the last hit of a tiny spoken confirm, not as a personality. Combos are still stun-plus-shot, the structure in combos.
Edge-guarding is the kit
Stand on the ledge. Do not jump out unless the shot already missed and you are covering the get-up. Cover jump with a quick line, cover the up-special with Buck Shot. If they have three up-attacks left, wait. The up-attack cap is your friend.
Stages matter. Wide chalkboard and city rooftops are Cowboy heaven. Jail’s bars eat bullets and invite Cop to sit on you. Lava punishes the greedy walk-off. Check stages before you lock him every game.
Bad habits
- Mashing draw at point-blank after the movement nerf.
- Recovering straight up every time so a projectile player can set a trap.
- Using the ultimate as a first hit in FFA.
- Ignoring Shift after a patch — Cowboy is a frequent balance target.
Lab against Diver platforms; they steal your horizontal. Lab against Chef dishes; lids can redirect. Lab against Magical Girl service if she still has interrupt armor on the super.
Cowboy does not need a 20-move combo. He needs a clean recovery, a patient ledge, and a microphone that does not clip the word “draw.” If the mic fails, you are a walking target — fix mic setup before you swap mains. When the room is right, he is still one of the best arguments for picking Smack Talk over a silent fighter.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Smack Talk questions.
Is Cowboy good for beginners?
Yes. Readable lines, real range, and a recovery people will actually shout. See beginner picks.
Did Buck Shot get nerfed?
Piercing players was removed in a balance patch. Treat it as a single-target ledge tool.
When did Cowboy join the roster?
With the lobby browser update in January 2026, well before 1.0. He is not a launch exclusive.
