How to Win in Smack Talk
Last stock is the only scoreboard — party rules for a loud fighter.
Winning Smack Talk is not DPS. It is remaining on the stage while seven other people finish a joke. The 1.0 client gives you stocks, optional teams, and a microphone that will betray you if you treat every silence as a chance to ult. This page is decision-making after you already know how to play and can fire lines from voice commands.
Play the stock, not the clip
A clip is a full ultimate on a fresh opponent. A win is a 12% poke that sends someone into lava. If you are ahead on stocks, become boring. Walk, fast-fall, throw the smallest projectile, and let other people collide. If you are behind, you may take a 1v1 on a side platform — still do not spend the super until they are clipped.
Percent is information. At 0–40, you are looking for stun confirms from combos. At 40–80, you are looking for ledge. Above that, one Cowboy shot or Magical Girl blast does the rest. Watching your own percent matters as much as theirs: if you are the juiciest target in FFA, stop center-stage theater.
Eight-player FFA is a different game
When the player cap hit eight, the studio admitted it was too chaotic and added a cap option. Use it. A four-player room is where skill shows. An eight-player room is where you:
- Hug the side, not the middle.
- Hit whoever is already in knockback.
- Never chase a kill if it takes you past two other hurtboxes.
- Keep the recovery phrase loaded because someone will always find you.
Stage choice is a win condition. Jail is a blender. Lava deletes greedy center play. Wide chalkboard rewards projectiles. Pirate ship rewards horizontal edge-guards. If you host, pick a stage that matches your pocket fighter. If you join, read the stages hazards before lock-in.
Team mode is comms plus friendly fire
Teams need a target. Two people shouting at different bodies will both whiff and both die. Text chat is enough: “wolf” is a better call than a paragraph. Friendly fire off lets you overlap Chef dishes. Friendly fire on means Duck cadence can team-kill. Hosts should announce the toggle in the lobby browser description or the first text line.
Do not both recover the same way. If one player has a Diver platform, the partner should take a normal jump path. Two bodies on one manta is a double stock for the opponent.
Mic discipline is a mechanic
Winners do not talk unless they are casting. Extra words collide with teammates and with your own next line. Discord should be a different device or a push-to-talk key that is not Shift. If recognition drops, you do not “play around it” for three stocks — you swap the mic as described in mic setup or you leave and rehost. Playing mute in a voice fighter is a concession.
Headphones. Always. Laptop speakers will hear your own ultimate and maybe someone else’s. That false trigger is how you SD.
Character choice as a winrate tool
Pick from the character tier list with the lobby size in mind. Projectile-heavy kits (Cowboy, Chef, Magical Girl, Frog Wizard) scale into FFA. Grapple and dash kits (Wolf, Cop, Macho Man) want smaller rooms. Joke kits (Barn, Santa, Fast Food) win when the room is already laughing and not covering ledge. Beginners should still lock the names on beginner picks until their recovery is automatic.
Counterpicking exists even without a formal stage-ban. If the last game was all air campers, bring a gun. If it was a projectile war, bring a reflector-like or a fast dash. The roster is large enough that you should have two fighters, not seventeen.
Host settings that decide games before they start
Stocks: three is a party, five is a set, seven is a hostage situation. Player cap: four for play, eight for content. Team friendly fire: off unless you trust the room. Random stage: off until people know lava. These toggles arrived with Macho Man and the eight-player revamp; using defaults is how you get a 40-minute scream-fest and no winner.
After the match, one sentence of notes: which phrase whiffed, which ledge you missed, whether the mic hiccuped. Then queue again. The getting started checklist still applies at hour twenty — Shift overlay on, recovery in the mouth, ego in the Discord, not in the blast zone.
Wins look quiet on the replay. That is the point.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Smack Talk questions.
What is the fastest way to win an eight-player lobby?
Cap it to four if you host. If you cannot, play the edge, hit already-hurt players, and never spend an ultimate at 0%.
Should I talk between moves?
No. Extra speech collides with your next command and with teammates. Use text chat for calls.
Does team mode change who is good?
Yes. Platforms and projectiles support a partner. Wild dash characters need friendly fire off. See the tier list.
How many stocks should I set?
Three for a party, five if people actually want a set. Announce it in the lobby so nobody queues an ultimate for a one-stock joke.
