Smack Talk Mic Setup

Mic setup is a tool because a silent Smack Talk client is a walking simulator. The studio has posted about this more than about any projectile. Follow the list in order. Do not skip to reinstall. Do not skip to a new fighter on the roster. The recognizer does not care that you unlocked Chef.

1. Prove the OS can hear you

Windows 10/11: Settings → Privacy & security → Microphone. Device access on. Desktop apps on. Steam and the game are desktop apps. Exclusive mode on the recording device can steal the input from Unity; turn it off in Sound Control Panel → device properties → Advanced.

macOS: System Settings → Privacy & Security → Microphone. Allow the Smack Talk binary. Monchii’s own thread replies point here first. If the OS never prompted, delete the permission entry and relaunch.

Linux: Native Steam package. Snap and Flatpak were called out as mic-broken. If you are on a store-installed sandbox, you are not looking at a game bug yet.

Steam Deck: Playable, still a Linux permission story. Test in the tutorial stage with headphones.

Steam Voice settings are a second layer. Pick the same device the game lists. A headset that works in Discord can still be the wrong default in Steam.

2. Prove the game selected that device

Launch, open in-game audio settings (mic options shipped in the first options patch). Speak. If the meter moves and phrases do not, you have a recognition or overlay mismatch, not a mute. Hold Shift and say the shortest line on voice commands. “Fireball” on Frog Wizard is a better test than a paragraph ultimate.

One physical mic. Disable webcams, Virtual Cable, and unused Bluetooth. The leave-lobby bug loves extra devices.

If the character’s mouth moves but no attack comes out, open Escape and use the yellow reset-mic control the studio pointed to in Steam threads. That is cheaper than a reinstall. Then say the shortest overlay line again.

3. The leave-lobby / spectator bug

If phrases worked and then died after someone left — including spectators — you hit the bug the studio spent months on. Workaround they posted: swap to a different mic in settings, then swap back. Patches in February 2026 claimed a real fix and re-enabled spectate. If it returns, do the swap before you throw a stock. Hosts can also disable mid-match joins when the room is sweaty.

4. Chat versus recognition

In-game voice chat was attempted, sounded choppy, and shipped disabled by default. The recognition stack did not like other scripts grabbing the mic. Use Discord or Steam voice on a different route. Push-to-talk in Discord must not be the same key as your talk-to-game habit. Text chat is enough for lobby codes.

Party speakers will false-trigger. Headphones. Always. This is also how you stop someone else’s ultimate from casting yours.

5. When it is not the mic

Wrong language overlay. You are on French lines with an English brain. Cadence resets (Duck). Up-attack cap. A move that was stun-nerfed, not muted — check patch notes. High ping rooms from the lobby browser. If the meter never moves, stay on this page. If the meter moves and you still lose, go back to how to play.

Linux Snap, Mac permissions, leave-lobby swaps, exclusive mode, extra devices, Discord overlap. That is the entire boss fight. Beat it once after install, then only come back when a patch or an OS update knocks the device off. A working mic is the difference between beginner picks and a refund.

Test every fix in an empty lobby. Friends will not debug your input while they are trying to shout Water Wheel.

A five-minute cold-start script

1. OS meter moves when you speak.
2. Steam voice test uses the same device.
3. In-game meter moves.
4. Shift visible.
5. Shortest overlay line on a beginner from beginner picks fires ten times in a row.
6. Jump-back recovery fires five times.
7. Invite one friend, have them leave, confirm you can still fire.
8. Only then open the lobby browser.

If step 7 fails, you are not ready for public rooms even if 1–6 were perfect. The leave bug is a social bug. It shows up when people exist.

Bluetooth earbuds with flaky dongles are a lifestyle choice that fights this genre. A wired headset is the meta. That sentence belongs on a tools page because it wins more stocks than a new fighter on the roster.
