Smack Talk Chef Guide

Kitchen hitboxes, throwables, and the accidental projectile tech everyone copied.

Chef Moves and Tech

Chef is the other first-week main, and the one who teaches you that Smack Talk hitboxes have props. You chop people at close range, you throw food at mid range, and if you understand the lid, you turn an ultimate that used to be “easy to dodge” into a redirect. The dedicated tech video is not a meme; it is the reason Chef stays in beginner picks and on the character tier list for different reasons.

Patch notes name Chop Chop, You’re Cooked, Mom’s Spaghetti (renamed from spaghetti and meatballs), Eat Up, and Sushi Train, the ranged add-on that shipped with Cowboy. Stun on Chop Chop was cut. You’re Cooked stun and active frames were tightened. Mom’s Spaghetti gained movement on windup. Eat Up was updated so more dishes interact with characters, not just the lid and pizza. Your overlay is still law.

Close range: chops are the jab

Chop Chop is your spoken jab. Two hits, shrinking stun. You cannot treat it like a 2025-length stun lock. Walk during the later windup, as the patch intended, and convert into You’re Cooked only when they are already stuck. If you whiff chops in an eight-player pile, you die; take the fight to a side platform as how to win recommends.

You’re Cooked is the pop. Reduced active frames mean you have to be honest about the animation. Use it as hit two, not as a raw anti-air unless you see a Wolf dash early.

Food is the zoning plan

Sushi Train is why Chef is a beginner who still works at eight players. You needed a projectile that was not an ultimate. Fire it in neutral. Fire it at the ledge. Do not fire it when a teammate is in the lane if friendly fire is on.

Mom’s Spaghetti is a commitment dish. Movement on windup lets you adjust; it is still not a panic button at 0%. Eat Up is the interaction package. After the High Seas patch, more dishes collide. That is your permission to hit your own food on purpose.

Lid tech, without mysticism

The studio’s own explanation: Chef was not supposed to touch those ultimate projectiles. The lid was the only interactable piece. A player hit the lid, the lid hit the projectile, the dish launched. Once you know that, you lab it. Stand where the lid will exist, tap it with a chop or a body, and watch the trajectory change. It will not be consistent in a seven-person blender. It will be consistent in a four-player lobby, which is where you should lab combos.

Do not spend the entire super on a flex. The old complaint was that Chef’s ultimate was easy to dodge. Lid tech is the answer only if the opponent is already clipped or cornered. Otherwise throw sushi and live.

Matchups in one paragraph each

Cowboy out-ranges you until you force a platform. Walk in on his end-lag. Diver platforms eat dishes — wait for the manta to despawn or cook on top of it. Magical Girl wins if you respect the blast and loses if you chop her start-up. Duck cadence beats you if you stand still; you have movement on several windups, use it. Gorilla is a punching bag for sushi until Ground Pound exists in your hurtbox.

Stages: kitchens in your head, rooftops in the game. City banana roofs and island grass both have enough horizontal for trains. Jail is cramped; chops go up in value, sushi goes down. Lava punishes spaghetti windup in the center. Read stages.

Chef is the fighter who makes the voice gimmick feel like a real kit. Short words, real projectiles, one piece of tech that rewards lab time. If your chops never fire, it is the mic, not the pasta — mic setup. If they fire and you still lose, you are chopping at 0% in the middle of FFA, and how to play already told you not to.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Smack Talk questions.

What is Chef's easiest kill tool?

Sushi Train at the ledge, or You're Cooked after a chop confirm. The ultimate is for clipped opponents, not openers.

Does lid tech still work?

The interaction was real enough for an official video. Eat Up later made more dishes collide. Lab it every patch.

Why did Chop Chop stop comboing?

Stun dropped from 0.35s to 0.2s per hit. You must convert faster or skip the second chop. See combos.

Chef or Cowboy for a complete beginner?

Cowboy if you want range with fewer words. Chef if you want to learn confirms. Both are on beginner picks.
