Getting Started in Smack Talk
Install, grant the microphone, then win your first stock without eating the whole roster.
Smack Talk looks like a joke until the first stock disappears because you whispered the wrong line. The 1.0 Steam build is a full 1–8 player platform fighter: you move with normal fighting-game inputs, then you cast attacks, recoveries, and ultimates by speaking. This page is the first hour. It does not rank the 27-fighter roster. It gets you into a lobby that hears you.
Buy the game on Steam (Windows, macOS, Linux, Steam Deck Playable). Launch it once, then stop. Before you touch character select, confirm the OS can see your microphone. Windows 11 users should enable microphone access for desktop apps. macOS players must grant the binary permission in System Settings — Monchii called this out after Mac support shipped. Linux players should use native Steam, not Snap or Flatpak packages that sandbox the mic. The longer checklist lives in mic setup.
Move before you talk
Community tutorials treat Smack Talk as a 2D platform fighter first. Default keyboard: WASD to walk, Space to jump, S to fast-fall, Shift to overlay the current fighter’s spoken kit. Controllers are fully supported. There is a keyboard-only option if you hate analog sticks, but you still need a mic for the real ruleset.
Learn a short hop, a fast-fall, and a recovery jump on the tutorial stage before you open public matchmaking. Up-specials are not infinite. A patch during Early Access capped up attacks at three until you touch ground. If you panic-shout recovery in the blast zone, you will SD just like in any Smash-like. Details sit on controls and the full how to play loop.
Hold Shift in character select and in a match. That overlay is the only phrase list that is guaranteed to match your build. Patch notes rename lines — Chef’s spaghetti dish, Pigeon’s flap call, Cowboy’s draw — and the wiki can lag. Use Shift as source of truth, then keep our voice phrase sheet nearby for practice.
Pick a loud beginner, not a meme
The roster is 27 fighters after 1.0, including Power Ranger and Kaiju. Do not start on Barn animal noises, Duck’s cadence combo, or Teacher’s detention ultimate. First-night picks with readable phrases and useful range: Chef, Cowboy, Fighter, Magical Girl. Why those four is spelled out on beginner picks. If you want a single name, Chef still teaches spacing because Chop Chop and the later sushi-train projectile exist in the same kit.
Cowboy is the other friendly high: ranged tools, a recovery people actually say out loud, and edge-guard shots that do not require a perfect smash DI read. The dedicated Cowboy page lists the draw, shotgun, and yeehaw-style recovery that showed up in official clips. Save Diver, Alien, and Fast Food Worker for week two — unique platforms and jokes are fun after you can land a basic.
Random character is in the game and people treat it like a twenty-eighth fighter. Use it after you have two mains, not before. Random plus a dead mic is how you donate stocks.
Host a tiny lobby, then scale
You can play with up to eight people. You should not, not on night one. Host a private room or a two-to-four player lobby. The host sets stock count, FFA versus team mode, friendly fire, and a player cap. Team mode arrived with Macho Man; eight-player chaos arrived later with the character-select revamp. Public rooms use the lobby browser and a lobby code on the host’s select screen.
If someone leaves and everyone’s phrases stop working, that is a known Early Access bug that patches tried to kill. Workaround: open settings, swap to another input, swap back. Spectating used to trigger the same failure, which is why mid-match spectate was pulled and later restored. If you still cannot cast, skip ranked pride and read mic setup before blaming the fighter.
What to do after the first win
Learn one edge-guard. Combos explains ledge trapping, Chef lid tech, and Duck’s repeated-phrase string. Then skim the character tier list so you know who is a problem in eight-player FFA versus a 1v1. Stages matter: lava submerges the center, jail is cramped, chalkboard is unusually wide. Tour them in the stages list.
Keep an eye on version 1.0 and patch notes because Monchii still ships free fighters. Discord and Steam news beat random social clips — those links are on community. When you want a plain recommendation on whether to buy, use the review.
First-hour scorecard: mic meters in Windows, Shift overlay visible, one beginner fighter, one recovery phrase you can say while jumping, a lobby of four or fewer. Everything else on this wiki is extra lives.
Frequently Asked Questions
Quick answers to the most common Smack Talk questions.
Can I play Smack Talk without a microphone?
You can walk and jump, but the game is built around spoken attacks. There is no full mute-ruleset. Fix permissions with mic setup.
What should I press to see my moves?
Hold Shift on keyboard. The overlay lists that fighter's voice lines. Controller users still get a move list in the same spirit — confirm the bind in controls.
Who is the easiest fighter for night one?
Chef or Cowboy. Both have readable phrases and a way to poke from range. See beginner picks.
Why did my voice stop working mid-session?
Leaving players used to break recognition for the whole lobby. Swap the selected mic in settings, then swap back. Longer notes are in mic setup.
