Smack Talk Voice Commands

Say the line, own the hitbox — without fighting the recognizer.

Voice Commands

Voice commands are the attack buttons. Smack Talk does not ask you to trash-talk as flavor; the recognizer is listening for short, character-specific phrases and then spawning the matching hitbox. If you mumble, the game does nothing. If you recite a line from a different fighter, the game still does nothing. This page is how the system behaves, not a dump of every line — keep the voice phrase sheet open for names, and always confirm against the Shift overlay in your build.

Monchii described the fantasy as Smash mixed with a shout-caster. Official trailers are full of fireball, water wheel, easy prey, and Magical Girl’s service line. Patch notes later add Cowboy draws, Chef dishes, Santa coal, Duck quacks, Diver anchors, Alien wormholes, Pirate krakens, Teacher detention, and the 1.0 Power Ranger / Kaiju kits. The library grows; the rules of speaking stay still.

What the recognizer actually wants

Short, punchy, unique. “Fireball” beats a paragraph. Lines that share syllables with another move on the same fighter will collide. The Duck experiment made that explicit: binding three tags to one phrase plays them in order if you keep repeating without hesitation. Pause, and it resets to hit one. That is a feature for Duck and a warning for everyone else — do not invent extra words in the middle of a listed line.

Volume is not a substitute for consonants. Screaming “yeehaw” into a cheap laptop mic can clip and fail, while a normal speaking voice on a headset works. Reduce Windows exclusive mode, pick one default recording device, and do not run Discord and the game on different devices. When phrases die after a disconnect, swap the selected mic and swap back, as documented in mic setup.

Localization matters more here than in a normal fighter. The studio added French, Spanish, German, Portuguese-Brazil, Russian, and Chinese with the caveat that they had to hand-translate around the recognition engine. If you play the French client, use the French overlay, not English wiki lines. This wiki keeps English names because that is how Steam patch notes are written.

Categories of spoken moves

Most kits follow a pattern even when the jokes differ:

  • Basic / jab string — fastest line, often two syllables. Chef Chop Chop, Duck Quack, Fighter palm calls.
  • Up attack — anti-air or hop. Limited to three until you land, so do not chant it in the void.
  • Down attack — slam, gift, shotgun. Cowboy’s down shot and Santa’s surprise gift live here.
  • Special — projectile or command grab energy. Sushi train, flowing koi, cookies and milk.
  • Recovery — the line you must be willing to say while holding toward stage. If you are shy about the words, pick another fighter from the roster.
  • Ultimate — long one-liner, big hitbox, easy to whiff in FFA. Spend it on a clipped opponent, not as an opener.
  • Emotes — Baa Haha, You Can’t See Me, Wax on Wax off, Bogos Binted. Fun, not kill confirms.

Practice in an empty lobby or the tutorial stage. Say each line ten times while walking. Then say the recovery while jumping backward off a platform. If you cannot do that, you do not have a recovery yet.

One-liners and power-ups

The Steam blurb talks about one-liners that power you up. In play, that is the ultimate and a handful of buff-style specials (Business Man stocks, Gorilla spirit, Magical Girl service). They are still voice lines with start-up. They are not a separate meter you fill by being rude in Discord. Trash talk in chat does nothing to the damage formula.

Because the recognizer is busy, in-game voice chat is a poor substitute for Discord. The Teacher update even left in-game voice off by default. Use text chat for “lobby code is on my select screen” and keep the mic clean for moves.

Ultimates are two lines, not one shout. A power bar fills from taking hits or over time. When it is full you say the power phrase first, then you have a short window — community guides put it near thirty seconds — to say the actual ultimate. Miss the window and the meter is gone. Official shorts also show prefire: start the sentence early, then land the last word as the hitbox should exist, like charging a smash. Duck’s repeated-phrase string is the same idea with cadence instead of a meter.

Training plan that does not waste friends

Night one: three lines on one beginner. Chef or Cowboy from beginner picks. Night two: add the recovery and one projectile. Night three: practice an edge-guard phrase from combos. Only then look at Diver manta platforms or Duck cadence.

If a line never fires, check Shift spelling, then permissions, then whether another player left. Do not assume the move was patched out until you read patch notes. Balance changes often tweak damage and stun without renaming the call.

Voice commands are a skill, not a gimmick. The players who look unhinged in trailers have the overlay memorized and the jump timing attached to the first syllable. Attach your jump to the first syllable too.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Quick answers to the most common Smack Talk questions.

Where do I see my Smack Talk voice lines?

Hold Shift in a match or in select. That overlay matches your patch. The voice phrase sheet is a study list, not a replacement.

Can I use English phrases on a French client?

Use whatever language the in-game overlay shows. Localization was built around the recognizer, so mixing languages is a good way to whiff.

Why does Duck combo off one sentence?

Multiple tags can share a phrase and play in order if you keep cadence. Hesitation resets the string. See combos.

Do ultimates need a special shout?

They are just longer lines with bigger commitment. Confirm the exact wording on Shift before you spend the stock on a joke.
