Smack Talk Diver Guide
Comment-contest fighter with platforms, anchors, and a pull that still needs timing.
Diver is the character that proves Smack Talk’s roster is a conversation. Monchii ran a comment contest, players designed the kit out loud, and the studio shipped manta-ray platforms, an anchor dive, a pull, and a torpedo volley. The official video is the design diary; this page is how to win a stock with it after the follow-up nerfs.
Patch notes later trimmed Get Over Here (less end-lag, slightly bigger pull hitbox, then a stun cut on the second hit), shortened Torpedo Volley start and end frames, reworked Dropping Anchor, enabled more movement on the anchor, and bumped Fish Slap knockback. There is a fish emote. None of that replaces the overlay. Read Shift, then think in platforms.
The job is stage control
You are not Cowboy. You do not win by shooting the ledge from a roof. You win by putting a floor where the opponent wanted empty air. Manta platforms were changed to solid in a small patch — that is a buff to camping and a buff to edge-guards. Place one outside the stage, force a recovery onto it, then slap or anchor.
Dropping Anchor is the dive. It got a rework and later full movement. Treat it as a mix of recovery cover and incoming. If you start it from too high in FFA, three people will clip you on the way down. Use it when someone is already hurt, the lesson in how to win.
Get Over Here is the command-grab fantasy. End-lag down, hitbox up, stun on hit two down. It is a catch, not a neutral poke. Throw it when they are on your manta or on a jail platform they cannot leave.
Combos are placement plus slap
Fish Slap’s knockback bump (5.5 to 6 on both axes) is there so the slap can start an edge-guard. Platform, slap, bullet-equivalent is the Diver confirm. You will not get Duck’s three-piece cadence. You will get Smash-like stage spikes. Lab it on island and pirate ship first; those layouts are in stages.
Torpedo Volley is the “I need a projectile” button. Shorter start and end frames make it usable. Still do not fire it from inside a pile. Aim the already-launched body.
Why Diver is a week-two main
Beginners should not start here. Platforms require you to think while speaking, and the pull whiffs if the recognizer lags. Lock Chef or Cowboy first, then come back when controls are boring. Diver rewards people who already know the three-up-attack cap, because you can spend your ups placing a manta instead of panicking.
Team mode is excellent. Friendly fire off plus a manta is a shared recovery. Friendly fire on plus a manta is a shared tomb. Call it.
Counterplay, so you are not surprised
Cowboy shoots the platform. Chef dishes sit on it. Magical Girl blasts the whole column. Wolf just ignores it and dashes you. If the room is full of guns, Diver is a puzzle; if the room is full of fists, Diver is a bully. That is why he slides around the character tier list depending on lobby size.
Mic issues hurt Diver more than Cowboy because a late platform is a wasted stock. If phrases drop after a leave, you do not have a stage anymore — mic setup before the next game.
Diver is the wiki’s example of “how to get a fighter into Smack Talk”: the community shouted a concept, the studio shipped it, then balance patches made it a real kit. Play him like a stage, not like a mascot.
A lab you can finish in fifteen minutes
Empty lobby, island stage, Diver only. Place a manta just off the right ledge. Jump off, fast-fall onto it, Fish Slap toward the blast zone, recover. Repeat on the left. Then place a manta in the center as a fake floor and walk off as if you SD — if you land, you understand the kit. Then fire Torpedo Volley from the manta, not from the main platform, so you learn the extra height. If any of those lines fail, stop labbing the character and open mic setup. A mute Diver is a man falling.
That lab is also the best way to teach a friend why Diver is week two. They will miss the platform, spend three up-attacks, and understand the beginner picks lecture without a speech.

Are Diver platforms solid?
A later patch made the manta platform solid. Use it as floor, not as a cosmetic.
How was Diver designed?

What is Diver's kill throw?
Platform at the ledge, Fish Slap or Get Over Here, then let blast-zone physics finish. Details in combos.
